HISTORY
On 16 February 1985 the “PEACE AND PEACE STATION” was inaugurated at the beginning of the 1st Panhellenic Indoor Athletics Championship. In March 1985, the first major sporting event, the European Indoor Athletics Championships, known as the EPA’85, was hosted at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
Since then, it has been the venue for very important European and World Championships in Athletics, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Handball, Wrestling, Fencing, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Boxing and all indoor sports.
It hosts high quality artistic shows, such as figure skating, since it is the only stadium in our country that has a skating rink. It has also hosted music and singing concerts of the whole range of musical genres from pop-rock to classical music, with renowned soloists and ensembles from Greece and abroad, from Yannis Markopoulos and Giorgos Dalaras to the SCORPIONS and Leonard Bernstein.
The S.E.F. is used as a venue for international scientific and professional conferences with up to 10,000 participants, while it has also hosted conferences of political parties that have influenced the political history of the country.
It was awarded the GOLD AWARD of the IACS (International Association of Buildings for Sport and Leisure) in November 1991 in the category: Buildings for International Events with reference to the owner: Peace and Friendship Stadium / Piraeus Sports Centre and the Architect: Thymios Papagiannis and Associates.
